Rev. Henry P. Cody former pastor of the Church of St. Timothy, West Hartford, died on Saturday, January 11, 2025 at his home in Naugatuck. Born in New Haven, CT April 17, 1934 to Henry T. and Mary (Oswald) Cody, he attended St. John the Evangelist Grammar School, Notre Dame High School, West Haven, St. Thomas Seminary, Bloomfield, St. Bernard’s Seminary, Rochester, NY (BA), and the North American College, Vatican City Europe. He received a licentiate in sacred theology (STL) from the Gregorian University, Rome, Italy. He was ordained to the priesthood in the chapel of the North American College Dec. 20, 1958. His assignments as a parochial vicar were at St. Francis, Naugatuck, St. James, Rocky Hill, St. John the Evangelist, West Hartford, St. Ann, Avon and St. Thomas, Thomaston. He was co-pastor of St. Thomas from 1983-88 and became pastor of St. Timothy’s in January 1988. He was elected to the Priests’ Senate and the Archdiocesan Personnel Board and served as Dean of the Suburban Waterbury and Suburban Hartford deaneries. He was the first Notre Dame High School graduate ordained to the priesthood and was inducted as one of the school’s Knights of Honor in 2005. He was also the recipient of the Passionist Heart Award. He was a former editorial writer and columnist for the Bridgeport Post-Telegram. From 1981 to 1992, he was chairman of the editorial board and chief editorial writer of the Catholic Transcript. In 1979 he received his doctor juris (JD) degree from the University of Connecticut School of Law. He was a member of the Connecticut Bar. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and Mory’s Association. Proud to be pastor of “the largest Jewish parish in the Archdiocese of Hartford”, he encouraged contacts between St. Timothy’s and Jewish congregations to foster better understanding and avoid the great sin of anti-Semitism. He leaves his nephews Stephen (Sharon), David (Kathy), and Douglas (Kelly) and his niece Susan Finnegan, all of Lancaster, PA and his sister-in-law Lois Cody of North Haven and his nephew Paul of Queens, NY. He also leaves his great nephews and nieces Thomas, Sarah, Nathan, Matthew, Josh, Christopher, Kaitlyn and Laura, and his great great nephew Flynn all of Lancaster, PA. He was predeceased by his brothers William of Lancaster, PA and Richard of North Haven. His family and friends wish to thank his caregiver and friend, Patricia Dayner, with whom he resided for over eight years. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 17, at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of St. Timothy, 1116 N. Main St. West Hartford by the Most Rev. Christopher J. Coyne, Archbishop of Hartford. Calling hours will be on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Church of St. Timothy.
