A longtime Johnstown area pastor has passed away just months after his retirement.

Officials with the Byzantine Catholic Archeparchy of Pittsburgh confirmed that Monsignor Raymond Balta passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, December 1. 2024.

Msgr. Balta served as the pastor of the St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, in Cambria City, for nearly thirty years.

He then retired from the parish several months ago.

Balta also previously served as a member of the Johnstown Redevelopment Authority.

Church officials say arrangements for Rev. Msgr. Balta are pending.
