Rev. Msgr. Thomas Francis Shreve of Midlothian, VA., passed into eternal life on Tuesday, April 30, 2024 – one day prior to his 63rd Anniversary of his Ordination to the Priesthood.
His education included BA in Theology and Philosophy, St. Charles College, Catonsville, MD; Master of Theological Studies, St. Mary Seminary, Baltimore, MD; Licentiate in Canon Law (J.C.L), University of St. Thomas, Rome, Italy. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 1, 1961 in Richmond, VA and named Monsignor with the rank of Domestic Prelate on February 16, 1997. The Papal Honor of Protonotary Apostolic was conferred on him on June 27, 2008, as decreed by Pope Benedict XVI.
Loved by so many whom he served as priest, teacher, and pastor throughout the Catholic Diocese of Richmond for more than 50 years, he quickly came out of ‘retirement’ to continue to minister as a Catholic chaplain for the last 10 years at both Bon Secours hospitals, St. Francis Hospital (Midlothian) and St. Mary’s Hospital (Richmond) until shortly before his death. In addition to the pastoral duties which he loved, he had also previously served as the Vicar General of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond for 27 years. Humility, positive spirit, and joy were hallmarks of his life and inspired so many.
Msgr. Shreve was born and raised in Falls Church and Arlington, VA. He was preceded in death by his parents, the late Eugene G. and Virginia (McCauley) Shreve and his brother, Jack Shreve. He is survived by his loving family who include his sister, Mary Ellen (Shreve) Pearl of Sandwich, MA; sister-in-law, Terry Shreve of Silver Spring, MD; devoted nieces and nephews Ginny (Shreve) Finley of Bethany Beach, DE; Christine (Tom) Shreve Bowersox of Ocean Ridge, FL; Michael (Sharon) Shreve of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; Mark (Lisa) Shreve of Chevy Chase, MD; John (Jenn) Pearl of Enfield, CT; Christopher Pearl of Simsbury, CT; and Jennifer (Dave) Pearl Kirk of Sandwich, MA. Also surviving are his 11 great nieces and nephews; five great-great nieces and nephews; and Shreve, McCauley, Trott, Murphy, Groschan, Spitler cousins throughout the greater Washington, DC and Richmond areas. Family will be receiving friends at Church of the Epiphany, 11000 Smoketree Drive, Midlothian, VA. on Tuesday, May 14 from 3 to 6 p.m. with Wake Service at 6 p.m.
On Wednesday May 15 at 10:30 a.m., Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at Church of the Epiphany, 11000 Smoketree Drive, Midlothian, VA. A livestream link is available at Rev. Msgr.
