Rev. John Mulvihill, retired priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago and former pastor of St. John Bosco Parish in Chicago, passed away Sunday, June 25, 2023, at the age of 83.

Mulvihill was born on Nov. 19, 1939 in Chicago. He attended Quigley Preparatory Seminary in Chicago, the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary in Mundelein and the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Italy.

Mulvihill was ordained to the priesthood in Rome on July 12, 1964, by Most Rev. Filippo Pocci, titular bishop of Jericho, and he celebrated his first solemn Mass on July 13, 1964 at the Basilica of St. Peter, Clementine Chapel in Rome.

After ordination, Mulvihill served as assistant pastor at St. John Bosco Parish on McVicker Avenue in Chicago. At the end of his first assignment, he continued to study theology at the Gregorian University.

From 1972 through 1997, Mulvihill served as associate pastor and then pastor at St. John Bosco Parish. During his pastoral career, he also served as vicar for religious supporting more than 8,000 religious sisters and 2,000 priests as canonical and spiritual consultant. Before retiring, he served as judge on the Court of Appeals, Province of Chicago, for 12 years. He retired from the priesthood in 2018.

Rev. Thomas Baldonieri, archdiocesan priest and one of Mulvihill’s closest friends and colleagues, remembered Mulvihill as a wonderful priest. “I always saw him being very caring to parishioners and he was always available to them,” Baldonieri said. He recalled Mulvihill’s incredible work ethic, how “he was a very busy, hardworking and positive person who never complained. I admired him for that,” Baldonieri added.

Visitation will be held Saturday, July 1 and Sunday, July 2 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Sax-Tiedemann Funeral Home, 9568 Belmont Avenue in Franklin Park. All other funeral services will take place on Monday, July 3 at St. James Church of Christ Our Hope Parish, 134 North Road in Highwood. Lying in State will be from 10 to 11 a.m. followed by the funeral Mass at 11 a.m. celebrated by Rev. Timothy O’Malley. Baldonieri will be the homilist.

Interment will occur at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines after the funeral Mass.
