Diocese: RALEIGH

Seminary Graduation Year: 1963

Julian J. Miller, 69, of Surfside Drive, went home to God Dec. 10, 2007. Born on Long Island, in Manhasset, N.Y., he was the middle son of the late Richard and Mary Miller and attended Saint Mary’s parish schools with his two brothers, Richard and Henry. Accepted in the Vatican Gregorian College in Rome, Italy, he graduated with highest honors in Christology, was ordained a Roman Catholic priest and later went on to earn a master’s degree in sociology. Returning to Long Island, he taught at the Immaculate Conception Seminary for some 20 years, from which he wrote published and unpublished theological works that are still in use today. During these years, he became the pastor of Our Lady Star of the Sea, a summer community in Saltaire, Fire Island. Julian later retired from the priesthood, but remained a faithful servant of God, continuing his dedication to God’s people as a social worker. Subsequently, he moved to Edenton and accepted a position as director at the Catholic Social Ministries. He served those needing help/aid through the Outreach Program and was involved with many of the local support groups and churches. His role in playing Santa Claus for the children at Christmas was legendary. (Yes, his beard was real.) A member of St. Anne Catholic Church and the Hertford Rotary Club, he was a part-time counselor at Chowan Hospital. His strong faith in family, friends and commitment to God was apparent in all his activities. Surviving are his older brother, Richard Miller and wife Katherine and a sister-in-law, Barbara Miller, all of Manhasset; two nieces, Katie and Bethanne; a nephew, Richard; great-niece, Nikohl; and great-nephew, Logan. Friends may join the family Wednesday from 2 to 5 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton. A scripture service will be held at 7 p.m. and following that service the family will again receive friends until 9 p.m. A Mass of Resurrection will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Anne Catholic Church by the Rev. Douglas P. Reed. Following services, he will be cremated. A private inurnment service will be held for the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Catholic Social Ministries, 123 E. Market St., Hertford, NC 27944.
