REV. BERNARD QUINN, 78, Senior Priest in residence at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 558 West Walnut Street, Lancaster, died Saturday evening, October 7, 2006 in Terni, Italy as a result of a tragic motor vehicle accident. Father Quinn attended St. Francis Xavier Grade School, Rockhurst High School. He studied two years at Rockhurst College, Kansas City, MO and attended St. Louis Preparatory Seminary, St. Louis, MO and Glenmary Seminary, Cincinnati, OH. He held a Doctorate from The Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome, Italy. He served 20 years as a Coordinator for the National Rural Research Center in Washington, D.C. Father Quinn was ordained a Priest for Glenmary Missioners on May 17, 1953, a Society for Apostolic Life and retired from full-time Priesthood in 2001. Since retirement, he assisted with parish duties at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. His first assignment was as business manager for the Glenmary Motherhouse. In 1956, he was assigned to start a five-county parish in Central West Virginia. In 1960, he was sent to the Casa Santa Maria in Rome to do a doctorate at Gregorian University in Mission Theology. On returning to the States, he was appointed director of the Glenmary Pastoral Center at Buck Creek, NC, where he worked with an internship program for new priests. In 1966, Father Quinn was appointed research coordinator of the newly established Glenmary Research Center, Atlanta, GA. He also held assignments with Glenmary in Ohio, West Virginia, Rome, Italy, Washington, D.C. and Georgia. Father Quinn became incardinated in the Diocese of Harrisburg in 1990 and later served the Diocese as Administrator and then Pastor of Holy Infant Church, York Haven (1987-1993) and St. Vincent’s Catholic Church, Hanover (1993-2001). Father Quinn served as Alternate Representative, Presbyteral Council, Adams Deanery (1995-2000). Born in Kansas City, MO on July 18, 1928, he was the son of the late Donald B. and Veronica Curtin Quinn. Father Quinn is survived by one brother, Joseph D. married to Teresa Quinn of Leawood, KS; niece, Colleen Quinn Hodes wife of Steven B. Hodes, DVM ( Brian, Tim and Alexa) of Rockaway, NJ, nephew, Martin Quinn husband of Laurel (Colin, Brendan and Sarah) of Leawood, KS; niece, Bridget Quinn Martin wife of Robert Martin (Mallori and K.T.) of Leawood, KS. “God has been good in giving me excellent health throughout my entire life”.-a quote from Father Quinn. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Mass of Transferral on Friday evening, October 20, 2006 at 7 P.M. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. Visitation times for Friday will be from 5 until 7 P.M. at the church. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 558 West Walnut Street, Lancaster, PA 17603 on Saturday, October 21, 2006 at 11 A.M. with The Most Reverend Kevin Carl Rhoades, as Celebrant. Visitation times for Saturday will be from 9 until 10:45 A.M. Final Commendation and Farewell will be in the Priest’s Circle in the St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery, Bausman, Lancaster County, PA.
