Rev. Charles R. Dautremont

Deceased: 2018-08-28

Diocese: GRAND RAPIDS

Seminary Graduation Year: 1961

Rev. Charles Robert Dautremont, age 84, of Wyoming, was called to his heavenly reward on Tuesday, August 28, 2018.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Gail Dautremont.  He will be lovingly remembered by his siblings: Joseph L. (Delores) Dautremont, Margaret Honton, Maureen (Luigi) Damiani, J.H. (Nancy) Dautremont, many nieces, nephews, and cousins. As a child growing up with his siblings, his parents taught them archery skills. Charles and his brothers became expert archers and won many competitions. He delivered newspapers, and worked in construction and as a seasonal mail carrier.

Father attended St. Joseph Seminary in Grand Rapids, Catholic University in Washington, D.C., and North American College, in Rome, Italy.  He was ordained a priest at the North American College chapel in Rome on December 18, 1960.

Father Dautremont loved to travel with friends or alone. He visited every National Park in the U.S. as well as traveled overseas to many foreign countries such as Turkey, Israel, and China. He was a voracious reader and became an authority on the Revolutionary and Civil Wars and Theology.  The theological reading he did became part of his homilies and evangelization to others.

He will be dearly missed by the members of all of his parishes and especially his last parish, St. Dominic Catholic Church. Father Dautremont served the Grand Rapids Diocese at Sacred Heart in Mount Pleasant, Blessed Sacrament in Grand Rapids, St. Joseph in Weare and St. Vincent in Pentwater, St. Francis Xavier in Chester, St. Joseph in Belding and St. Mary at Miriam, and Sacred Heart in Muskegon Heights, before  moving in 1996 to St. Dominic in Wyoming, where he finished his priestly calling. He was especially pleased to have served many years as the diocesan ecumenical officer and as the diocesan theologian.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, September 6, 2018 at St. Dominic’s Church, 50 Bellevue SW, Wyoming, with Bishop David Walkowiak officiating. Interment Resurrection Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet the family Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the church, with a Vigil at 4:00 pm.
