Rev. Charles P. Essman died on Monday, June 18, 2007.

Father Essman was born June 4, 1926, in Columbus,Ohio, the son of the late Charles P. and Viola Gale Essman.

Father attended Holy Name School, St. Charles Preparatory and College, and the North American College and Gregorian University in Rome, Italy.

He was ordained to the priesthood on December 8, 1951, in Rome by Archbishop Martin J. O’Connor. In 1954, he received the S.T.D. from the Gregorian University.

During his priesthood, Father Essman was assistant pastor at St. Joseph Cathedral and St. Agatha Church; pastor of Church of the Ascension, Johnstown, Church of the Nativity, Utica, St. Aloysius, Columbus, St. Pius X Church, Reynoldsburg, St. Peter Church, Chillicothe; associate pastor at St. Brendan, Hilliard and St. Michael, Worthington.

He served on the staff of the North American College in Rome during two different periods, and was Business Manager there. He served in important diocesan offices including Chancellor and Defender of Justice.

Father is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Joseph Essman and Peggy Ann Siegal of Miami, FL; niece, Julia Essman of Key Largo,FL; and numerous cousins.

Visitation will be held at the COOK & SON-PALLAY FUNERAL HOME,1631 Parsons Ave.,Columbus, on Thursday, June 21 from 6-9 p.m.

The body will be received at St. Pius X Church,1051 Waggoner Rd.,Reynoldsburg, at 10 a.m. Friday, June 22, where visitation will continue until the Funeral Liturgy at 11 a.m. with Most Reverend Bishop Frederick F. Campbell, Principal Celebrant, and Father Timothy Hayes, homilist.

Burial will follow in St. JosephCemetery.
