Rev Charles Leo Froehle age 77, passed away on January 6, 2015, surrounded by his family. Born April 20, 1937, in St. Cloud, MN to Leo and Catherine Froehle, he grew up in St. Paul. He was a graduate of the St. Paul Seminary leading to his ordination to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis on February 2, 1963. After serving two years at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis he began studies in Rome where he earned a Licentiate and a Doctorate in Theology from the Angelicum, the University of St. Thomas in Rome in 1968. He returned to the St. Paul Seminary where he served as professor of sacramental theology from 1968 to 1980, during which years he also served as Dean of Studies and Vice-Rector. In 1980 he was appointed rector and was one of the major architects of the affiliation of The Saint Paul Seminary with the University of St. Thomas. In 1987 he also became the Vice-President of the University of St. Thomas for the School of Divinity. He also oversaw the design and construction of the new administration center and residence hall as well as the renovation of St. Mary’s Chapel. After retiring as rector of the St. Paul Seminary, he served as pastor of the Church of St. Francis Xavier, Buffalo, MN (1994-2001) and Our Lady of Lourdes in Minneapolis (2001-2012).
