Daniel J. Maher, 82, entered eternal life on Thursday, December 31, 2020.
Born in County Tipperary, Ireland he was the oldest of six children to John and Mary O’Dwyer Maher. He was educated in the National and Christian Brothers Schools. After studying philosophy with the Cistercian Fathers he entered St. Patrick’s Seminary, Carlow, Ireland. He was ordained on June 9, 1962, for the Diocese of Albany.
His assignments included from 1962-1966 associate pastor at St. Teresa of Avila Church in Albany, while also serving as Chaplain at Albany Medical Center Hospital. Maher’s further assignments included from 1965-1966 at St. Mary’s Church, Clinton Heights; 1966-1973 at St. Francis DeSales, West Albany, while also on the faculty at Mercy High School; 1973-1994 Pastor at Sacred Heart of Mary, Watervliet; and 1994-2008 Pastor at Holy Cross Church, Albany until his retirement.
He was the brother of William Maher, John Maher, Noel Maher, and Thomas Maher, all of Ireland; and brother of the late Louise Spearman.
Funeral services on Friday, January 8, at 11 a.m. in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, Watervliet, where his funeral Mass will be celebrated. Please observe all COVID-19 protocols. The Rite of Committal will be held in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands, immediately following the funeral Mass.
