Reverend Daniel D. Tranel, 82, of East Dubuque, IL, died on Thursday, December 11, 2014, at Stonehill Franciscan Services, Dubuque, IA, after complications from a stroke.

Father was born on September 15, 1932, in East Dubuque, IL, the son of Edward and Lucille (Kieffer) Tranel.

Father was ordained to the priesthood on December 16, 1956, in Rome, Italy. He studied at Loras College, Dubuque, IA, and North American College Seminary, Rome, Italy. Father’s assignments were as Administrator of St. Patrick Parish and Mission Parish, Maytown, IL, (1/1957–8/1957); Chaplain at St. Anthony Hospital, Rockford, and Parochial Vicar, St. Edward Parish, Rockford, IL, (9/1957–9/1958); Administrator, Nativity Blessed Virgin Mary, Menominee, IL, (9/1958–6/1959); Parochial Vicar, St. Joseph Parish, Harvard, IL, (6/1959–9/1960); Faculty, Marian Central High School, Woodstock, IL, (8/1961–9/1967); Chaplain, St. Dominic College, St. Charles, IL, (9/1967–10/1970); Campus Ministry, Newman Center, DeKalb, IL (10/1970–10/1973); Pastor, St. Joseph Parish, Apple River, IL, (10/1973–10/1983); Pastor, Holy Trinity, Scales Mound, IL, (10/73–2/1988); Pastor, St. Mary Parish, Galena, IL, (10/1983–6/2007; Administrator, then Pastor, St. Michael Parish, Galena, IL, (5/1996-6/2007). Father retired from active ministry 6/2007.

Surviving are his siblings, Richard Tranel, of Monroe, WI, Sister Norita Tranel, OSF, of Dubuque, IA, Sister Betty Tranel, S.Sp.S, of Northfield, IL, Marge Jahn, of East Dubuque, IL, Sister Jean Tranel, OP, of Naples, FL, Ned (Virginia) Tranel, of Billings, MT, and Bert (Ann) Tranel, of Galena, IL; a sister-in-law, Bonnie Tranel, of Gillette, WY; and many nieces; nephews; great-nieces; and great-nephews. Father Tranel was preceded in death by his parents, four (4) brothers, Ralph, Howard, Father Dorrance and Roger; a sister, Sister Danita Tranel, OSF; three (3) sisters-in-law, Florence, Lillian and Donna Tranel; and a brother-in-law, Gene Jahn.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, December 17, 2014, at 10 A/M, at St. Mary Church, East Dubuque, IL, Bishop David J. Malloy will be the celebrant. Vistiation will be from 3 P/M to 7 P/M, on Tuesday, December 16, 2014, and from 8:45 A/M to 9:45 A/M, on Wednesday, at St. Mary Church, 170 Montgomery Avenue, East Dubuque, IL. Interment will be at the East Dubuque Cemetery, East Dubuque, IL.

Arrangements are being made by the Miller Funeral Home, East Dubuque, IL.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be given to a favorite charity in Father Dan’s honor.
