SPRINGFIELD – Rev. Donald Jerome Meehling, 78, of Springfield, IL, passed away at 10:04 m. on Sunday, June 27, 2010, at St. John’s Hospital.
He never fully recovered from a stroke and car crash which occurred on March 26, 2009.
He was born March 24, 1932, in Marshall, IL, the son of Frank N. and Lorene R. Waller Meehling.
He graduated from Marshall High School in 1950 and earned his M.A. and S.T.B. degrees from St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein, IL. He was ordained a Catholic priest on May 24, 1958, in Springfield, IL. He celebrated his 50th anniversary to the priesthood in 2008 and remained a resident of Springfield.
He served several parishes in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois, including St. Anthony in Effingham, St. Thomas in Newton, St. Norbert in Hardin, Mother of Dolors in Vandalia, St. Aloysius and Christ the King in Springfield, St. Thomas in Decatur, Ss. Peter & Paul in Collinsville, St. Cecilia in Glen Carbon, Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Assumption, St. Vincent Hospital in Taylorville, St. Patrick in Decatur, St. Margaret Mary in Granite City, Francis DeSales in Moweaqua and St. Dominic in Quincy.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his sister, Virginia R. (husband, Omer) Shawler; his brother, William F. (wife, Katherine Scholfield) Meehling; nieces, Marjann (husband, Chris) Palmer and Melinda A. Meehling; nephews, David F. Shawler, Donald M. Shawler, Thomas W. Meehling and William D. Meehling; great-nephew, Nathan Meehling; and great-nieces, Madeline and Nicole Meehling.
Family will receive friends from 12:30-2:45 p.m. on Friday, July 2, 2010, at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 524 E. Lawrence, Springfield, IL.
Funeral Mass will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, July 2, 2010, at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception with Rev. Peter C. Harman, celebrant.
An additional visitation will be held from 10:00-11:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 3, 2010, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 414 S. 6th St., Marshall, IL.
Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
