Reverend Douglas Clark Brougher, a priest of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, died on October 15, 2023. He was 86 years of age. Father Brougher was born on June 1, 1937, in New Orleans, LA to Theophilus Clark Brougher and Mary Elizabeth O’Reilly. He is survived by his sister, Marie Patricia Joseph (James), cousins Barbara Johnston (Bob), Beth Owen (Greg), William O’Reilly (Marina), Betsy Brougher Ferguson and the late Patrick O’Reilly, Jr. His nieces and nephews include Maria Fox, Heidi Schexnayder, Jennifer Brewer (Godchild), John Joseph, Bridget Joseph, Stephen Joseph, Erin Joseph, and the late Michael Joseph. He was preceded in death by Monsignor Alvin O’Reilly, Fr. Doug’s beloved uncle and mentor. Fr. Doug leaves behind many beloved friends and associates from his years at Touro Infirmary, especially the late Tessie Trosclair, his close friend and assistant in ministry for decades. He attended elementary school at St. Rita School in New Orleans. His secondary and college education were at St. Joseph Seminary in St. Benedict. Fr. Brougher earned a B.A. in Philosophy at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans, a S.T.L. in Theology at Gregorian University in Rome, and was ordained to the priesthood on December 19, 1962, in Rome, Italy. He served as Assistant Pastor at St. Raphael the Archangel Church in New Orleans, St. Mary Magdalen Church in Metairie, and St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Church in New Orleans. Father Doug served as pastor at St. Joseph Church in Gretna, Sacred Heart Church in Norco, and co-pastor at Immaculate Conception Church in Marrero. He spent time in residence at St. Joseph Seminary College, served as Rector of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in New Orleans, and chaplain to the Ursuline Sisters. Fr. Doug served as assistant director of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine; served on the Continuing Formation Committee; moderator of the High School Division of the Family Life Bureau; faculty at St. John Vianney Preparatory school, and Archdiocesan Coordinator of the Gesu Caritas Fraternity of Priests. Fr. Brougher had been the chaplain at Touro Hospital for the last 37 years, until the time of his death. He resided at Good Shepherd Parish, New Orleans. Family and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, October 20, 2023, at the Basilica of St. Stephen, 1025 Napoleon Ave., New Orleans.
