Fr. Edward J. Mitchell  April 18, 1928 – January 9, 2020

Dear son of the late Edward and Josephine. Brother of the late Gerald. Brother-in-law of Marilyn Mitchell. Uncle of Anne (Michael) Brophy, Sharon (Stuart) Fisher, Meg (John) Ogg, and Steven (Robin) Mitchell. Great uncle of Katie (Matt), Erica (Joe), Mary (Paul), Thomas, Adam, Benjamin, Daniel, Devyn, Kynson, and Rowyn. Great great uncle of Austin, Shelby, Lillian, Anistyn, Steven and Malachi.

Visitation Sunday 3 – 8 pm with a 7 pm Rosary at the John N. Santeiu & Son Funeral Home. In state Monday 9:30 am until the 10 am Funeral Service at the St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 31530 Beechwood (at Merriman Road, 2 blocks north of Ford Rd.).

Fr. Mitchell was ordained on June 5, 1954 at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Detroit. Between 1954 and 2000, he shepherded at the following locations:

  • St. Mary’s of Redford, Detroit
  • Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Detroit
  • Rosary High School, Detroit
  • University Hospital, Ann Arbor
  • St. Matthew’s, Detroit
  • St. Mary Magdalene’s, Melvindale
  • St. Joan of Arc, St. Clair Shores
  • St. Irenaeus, Rochester Hills

After becoming a Senior priest on July 1, 2000, he retired to the Senior Clergy Village in Livonia. He continued serving the Lord by helping out at St. Raphael the Archangel (currently, St. Thomas the Apostle) and several other parishes in the area. He also said daily mass for the Felician Sisters and frequently visited their infirmary.

Fr. Mitchell loved to explore and discover Michigan. He traveled by foot, bicycle, and motorcycle on his camping excursions throughout the state. On a study trip to Rome in 1989, he flew on the Concorde.

Fr. Mitchell was devoted to his parishioners and held their trust in highest regard.
