GROWNEY, Rev. Eugene R., S.J. – 61, peacefully in Los Gatos, CA., December 4, 2003. He was born in San Francisco, May 2, 1942, the son of the late Bernard Growney and Loretta Riordan Growney. He attended Mission Dolores Grammar School, St. Ignatius College Prep, San Francisco, and entered the Jesuits in 1960. He was ordained a priest in 1972. Father Growney served in a variety of educational ministries, both as a teacher and administrator. He taught history at St. Ignatius Prep (1967-69, 1973-78) and Brophy College Prep, Phoenix (1978-79), and served as Principal of Brophy (1983-88 and 1992-96) and Loyola High School, Los Angeles (1989-92). More recently, he was Director of Community Service at St. Ignatius (1998-2000), Superior at Loyola High School (2000-03) and Associate Pastor at St. Agnes Church, San Francisco. Fr. Growney was a very loyal and faithful Jesuit. He will be remembered by many former students for his dry wit and dramatic stories. His bravery and determination in fighting his cancer were evidence of his strong will. Father will be missed as a good friend, a compassionate confessor and a wise counselor. Fr. Growney was the devoted brother of John Growney and sister-in-law Sandra Growney; adoring uncle of Nicholas and Steven Growney; loving nephew of Leona E. Growney and Catherine Jenkins; devoted cousin of Thomas (Barbara) Larkey, Catherine (Jerry) Fritz, Regina (Phil) Dossey, John (Tammy) Rauch, and Kathleen (Hugh) Barker. He is also survived by many second cousins. A Vigil will be celebrated Mon, Dec. 8, 7:30 p.m., with Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, December 9, 10:00 am, both at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1025 Masonic Ave., San Francisco. Memorial Masses will be offered at Brophy College Preparatory of Phoenix, AZ and Loyola High School of Los Angeles. For times of those services, please contact those schools. Burial will be at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery, Santa Clara.
