George Carl Gustafson

George Carl Gustafson, age 70 of Manistique, Michigan passed away February 11, 2019, at home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born April 20, 1948, in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan to Carl Albert and Georgiana Lucille (Gaspar) Gustafson. George attended high school at St. Lawrence Seminary in Mount Calvary, Wisconsin. He received his bachelor’s degree in Moral Theology from The Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. He attended North American College in Rome, Italy and received his master’s degree in Moral Theology. Finally, he received his doctorate in Moral Theology from The Pontificia Universitas Lateranensis in Rome, Italy on December 10, 1987. After returning from Rome, he both served the Diocese of Marquette as a parish priest in a number of locations in the UP and taught Moral Theology at St. John’s Seminary in Plymouth, Michigan. He went to work at Boyne Mountain in reservations and later became the personnel manager at Jack’s Fresh Market in Manistique where he worked until his retirement in 2014.

He married Kathleen Derwin in Petoskey, Michigan on July 20, 1998. They were members of St. Francis de Sales Parish.

He is known for being an avid reader. He loved sports, especially the Detroit Lions. He enjoyed working in the garden, grocery shopping, and always cherished the time he spent with his family. George was also the chaplain for the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his loving wife Kathy; son Donald (Marie) Lloyd of Bowie, Maryland; brothers Albert Gustafson of Ortonville, Michigan, Donald (Sherrie) Gustafson of St. Ignace, Michigan; sister-in-laws Denise Van Den Bosch, Tina Florek, and Terry LaVigne; brother-in-laws Fran Derwin, Tom Derwin and Tim Derwin; and his precious grandchildren Cody and Conner Lloyd.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Howard Gustafson.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 – 5:00 pm, Sunday, February 17, 2019 at Fausett Family Funeral Homes in Manistique, MI. A funeral service will be held at St. Francis de Sales Parish Monday, February 18, 2019 at 12:00 pm with Rev. Fr. Larry VanDamme officiating.
