Rev. George Stephen Macho Of St. Luke's Church, 87

Services have been set for Thursday and Friday for Rev. George Stephen Macho, who had been a part-time priest at St. Luke Roman Catholic Church, Toms River. Macho died Aug. 30 at the age of 87, according to his obituary on the Silverton Memorial Funeral Home website.

Rev. Macho was born Feb. 17, 1928, in Passaic and He attended Garfield Public School and Pope Pius XII High School. He graduated from Seton Hall University in 1949; then Immaculate Conception Seminary, Darlington.

He was ordained by Archbishop Thomas A. Boland ordained him a priest for the Archdiocese of Newark at St. Patrick’s PRO-Cathedral, Newark, on May 30, 1953. He was assigned as associate pastor at St. Paul the Apostle Church, Irvington, and served that parish until October 1967, when he accepted a commission as chaplain in the U.S. Navy.

After Chaplain School at Newport, R.I., Father Macho served the following commands: Naval District Six, Charleston, S.C.; USS Bennington; Naval Training Center, Orlando, Fla.; Naval Air Station, Kodiak, Alaska; Coast Guard Base, Kodiak, Alaska; Coast Guard Training Center, Cape May; 3rd Marine Division, Okinawa, Japan; Naval Training Center, San Diego; Commander Amphibious Squadron Three, USS Okinawa; Naval Station, Subic Bay, Philippines; Naval Hospital, San Diego; Naval Station, Mayport, Fla.; Marine Corps Logistics Base, Albany, Ga.; and Naval Support Activity, Naples, Italy.

Father Macho was selected for graduate school in 1977 and received a master’s degree in pastoral education.
He was award the following medals, awards and ribbons: Meritorious Service Medal (with Gold Star Second Award); Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Star; National Defense Service Medal; Coast Guard Commendation Medal; Meritorious Unit Commendation; Coast Guard Unit Commendation; Sea Service Ribbon; Coast Guard Ribbon; Overseas Ribbon. He retired from the Navy in February 1990 with the rank of captain.

Father Macho stayed in Europe and attended the Institute for Continuing Theological Education at the North American College in Rome. On completion of these studies, he was assigned to Church of the Madonna, Fort Lee, until his appointment as administrator of Church of the Nativity.

He was a member of the Greenbriar Woodlands Association for more than 25 years and worked part-time serving the people of St Luke Roman Catholic Church.

He leaves his brother Robert and his wife Evelyn, nephews and nieces Dr. James Macho, Linda Seward, Richard Macho, Danae Maxwell and Jerome Macho. He also leaves nine great-nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Thursday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at St Luke Roman Catholic Church, 1674 Old Freehold Rd, Toms River. The funeral Mass is set for 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, but those wishing to do so may arrive at 9:30 a.m. Internment to follow St Mary’s Cemetery, Saddle Brook.
