Retired Naval Capt. Father J. William Hines, 69, formerly of Pittston, passed away Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at home in Royersford.

Born in Pittston on March 26, 1944, he was the son of the late John A. and Kathryn Callahan Hines. He attended St. John the Evangelist High School and Benjamin Franklin University, Washington, D.C.

He entered the Sons of Mary in Farmington, Mass., as a postulant. Father Hines attended St. Mary’s College, Kentucky, Trinitarian College, Pikesville, Md., Mount St. Mary Seminary, Emmitsburg, Md., and Christ the King Seminary, Olean, N.Y. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Washington at the Cathedral of St. Matthew on May 13, 1972.

His first assignment as parochial vicar was at Sacred Heart Parish, Bowie, Md. In 1974, he was named parochial vicar at St. Francis de Sales Parish, Washington, D.C., and as parochial vicar at St. Ann Parish, Washington, D.C., in 1976.

Father Hines entered active service as a chaplain in the U.S. Navy in June 1979. In 1999, after 20 years of service, he retired from the Navy as a captain and nine years as a reservist. Father Hines served as chaplain at the U.S. Naval Academy in one of the many assignments with the U.S. Navy.

He was temporarily assigned as parochial vicar at St. John Vianney Parish, Prince Frederick, Md., and in 1999 was appointed pastor of St. Mary Parish, Landover Hills, Md. Father Hines served as a consultant to the Office of Communications, Dean of Middle Prince George’s County, Md., and as a member of the Formation Board and Priest Council. In 2006, he was appointed pastor of the Shrine of St. Jude Parish, Rockville, Md., until his retirement in 2012.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, John A. Hines Jr.

Surviving are his siblings, Gerard A. Hines and his wife, Mary Ann, East Stroudsburg; Mary Kay Gvodas and her husband, John M. Sr., Royersford; Thomas F. Hines and his wife, Theresa, Pittston; Robert H. Hines and his wife, Eileen, Exeter; Joseph C. Hines and his wife, Patricia, Pittston; Ann Hunter and her husband, Thomas, Jenkins Township; Patrick J. Hines, Wyoming; and Margaret Belinka and her husband, Joseph, Swoyersville; sister-in-law, Joni Hines, Schwenksville; 22 nieces and nephews; numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, as well as cousins.
