Reverend Monsignor James J. Flood, Pastor Emeritus, Saint Margaret Parish, Narberth, died of lung cancer at Saint Francis Country House, Darby, on Monday, January 17, 2011.
Monsignor Flood was born on February 11, 1932, in Chicago, Illinois. He is the son of the late James Flood and the late Mary Ellen Danks. Monsignor Flood attended Saint Gregory Parochial School, Chicago, Saint Matthew Parochial School, Philadelphia, LaSalle College High School, and Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary, before entering the North American Pontifical College in Rome.
Monsignor Flood was ordained on December 20, 1958, at the North American College Chapel, Rome, by Most Reverend Martin J. O’Connor, and named Honorary Prelate to His Holiness Pope John Paul II on April 24, 1982. Monsignor Flood served as Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of Mercy Parish, Philadelphia; Saint Martin of Tours Parish, New Hope; and Saint Anastasia Parish, Newton Square. In 1963, he received a doctorate in systematic theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University. He served as a member of the Faculty, Cardinal Dougherty High School, Philadelphia, and a member of the Faculty and Vice Rector at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary, Overbrook. He served as Pastor, Saint Margaret Parish, Narberth, from 1985 through 2002, when he was appointed Pastor Emeritus. Monsignor Flood also served as Parochial Vicar with Senior Priest status at Saint Timothy Parish, Philadelphia.
The Reception of the Body will be held at Saint Timothy Church, Philadelphia, on Wednesday, January 19, 2011, at 4:00 PM, followed by a viewing. A parish Mass will be celebrated at 7:00 PM. His Eminence Cardinal Justin Rigali will celebrate a Funeral Mass for Monsignor Flood at Saint Timothy Church, Philadelphia, on Thursday, January 20, 2011, at 11:00 AM. A viewing will be held beginning at 9:00 AM. Concelebrating the Funeral Mass will be Reverend James A. Grant, Reverend Monsignor Kevin C. Lawrence, Reverend Stephen F. Leva, Reverend John D. Silcox, and Reverend Monsignor Daniel J. Sullivan. Father Silcox will be the homilist.
Monsignor Flood is survived by his brother Thomas (Sarah), nieces, nephews, and cousins. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon.
