Rev. James Edward Hoelscher died on Saturday, May 28, 2011 in San Antonio at Padua Place after a long illness. He was born on November 29, 1934 in Poth, Texas, to parents, Adolph Theophil “Pappy” and Aurelia Mary “Leah” (Laake) Hoelscher. Fr. Hoelscher was preceded in death by his parents. He attended schools in Poth and Floresville as well as St. John’s Seminary in San Antonio, Texas. He then went on to graduate from the North American Pontifical College in Rome, Italy. On December 20, 1958, he was ordained in Rome as an archdiocesan priest for San Antonio. He is survived by brother, Donald Hoelscher and wife, Rose Lee; nephew, John Hoelscher and wife, Debbie; nieces, Deanna Hoelscher and husband Steve Kelder; Gretchen Stepke and husband Tim; Julie Weber and husband Tom and nine great-nieces and nephews. Fr. Hoelscher served as a priest for over 52 years in numerous parishes in San Antonio and the surrounding community including Blessed Sacrament, St. Lawrence, Holy Spirit, St. Luke’s in Loire, and Our Lady of Guadalupe in Leming. For over 20 years he served at Holy Cross High School as a teacher and principal. Known as a superb speaker, Fr. Hoelscher was a voracious reader especially of Catholic history and mystery books by English writers. His homilies often highlighted three distinct subjects that he masterfully wove together into one common theme. He greatly enjoyed traveling, eating a variety of cuisines, and playing cards, especially Tarock with fellow priests. Viewing will be held Tuesday, May 31 at 5pm at Angelus Funeral Home with a rosary and wake service to follow at 7pm. Funeral mass will be held at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church Wednesday, June 1 at 10am. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to an Archdiocesan Burse to be set up in the name of Rev. James E. Hoelscher. Send contributions to Pastoral Center Attn. Burses P.O.
