Reverend John “Jack” T. Heraty, STL, 82, of Huntley, died peacefully, September 24, 2021 at Friendship Village of Schaumburg, where he was a resident.

Father was born on June 23, 1939 in Chicago, IL, to Peter and Catherine Heraty. Father Heraty attended St. Maur Seminary, South Union, KY (1963-1967). He then attended The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC (1969) where he received his Licentiate of Sacred Theology (STL). Father went on to further his studies at Loyola University, Chicago, IL (1973) where he received a Master’s Degree in Guidance & Counseling. He later attended DePaul University, Chicago, IL (1976) and received a Master’s Degree in Sociology.

Father Heraty was ordained a priest by the Most Reverend George Biskup at St. James Parish, Rockford, on May 27, 1967. Father’s first assignment was in 1967 as Parochial Vicar at St. Patrick Parish, St. Charles (1967-1971). In 1970 Father was appointed Chaplain for the Illinois State Training School for Boys, St. Charles (1970-1993). He was later appointed Chaplain of Mooseheart Child City & School, Aurora (1979-1998). Father was then assigned Pastor at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, Sandwich (1998-2009) and retired there from active ministry on July 1, 2009. His families remembers him as person who loved to travel, cook and spend time with family. He was notorious for hosting Thanksgiving dinner and proudly showing all of his slides from all of his travels. He was a loving brother, uncle and friend who will be missed by all who knew him.

Father is predeceased by his parents Peter and Catherine and his sister, Lucille. Father is survived by his sisters, Maureen (Lawrence) Lantero, Elizabeth “Betty” Pellikan and his brother, Peter Heraty (Nancy) and by many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian burial will be on Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Church, 10307 Dundee Road, Huntley. Visitation will take place 9:00 – 11:00 a.m., at the church prior to the Funeral Mass. Burial will take place at All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines, Illinois.
