The death of the Reverend John A. Horgan, first pastor of the Church of the Assumption in Woodbridge, occurred in the St. Regis House, New Haven, on Sunday, (August 5, 2001). Father was born in Hartford, January 27, 1911, son of the late John J. and Anna Gooding Horgan. He attended St. Peter's School, Hartford, St. Thomas Seminary, Bloomfield, North American College, Rome, Italy. He was ordained to the priesthood in Rome, Italy, on December 8, 1936. He was predeceased by a brother, George Horgan; and is survived by nieces and nephews. He was assigned parochial vicar at St. Patrick Church, Thompsonville, St. Paul Church, West Haven, and later appointed first pastor of the Church of the Assumption in Woodbridge, where he had served for 29 years. Father Horgan's body will be received at the Church of the Assumption, Center Rd., Woodbridge, Wednesday, August 8, 4 p.m. His body will lie in state until 7 p.m., when a parish Mass will be celebrated. The Reverend Gene E. Gianelli, present pastor will be the principal celebrant. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, 11 a.m., with the Most Reverend Peter A. Rosazza, principal celebrant. The Reverend Eugene Charman will be the homilist. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Waterbury. Memorial contributions may be made in Fr. Horgan' s memory to the Church of the Assumption Restoration/Education Fund, 81 Center Rd., Woodbridge, CT 06525. Sisk Brothers Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
