Rev. John E. Sassani, 64, of Newton, formerly of Swampscott, passed away on Sunday April 21, 2019 after a brief illness. Born in Lynn to Nicholas and the late Natalie A. (Cashman) Sassani, he was raised in Swampscott.

Father John was a 1972 graduate of St. Johns Prep in Danvers, and a 1976 graduate of St. John Seminary in Brighton, MA. He continued his post-graduate studies at North American College in Rome and Creighton University where he earned his masters degree in Divinity. Father John served at Sacred Heart parish Roslindale, St. John the Evangelist Winthrop, St. John the Evangelist Newton, St. Theresa of Lisieux Sherbourne. Father Sassani was the Director of the Office of Spiritual Development for the Archdiocese of Boston, and authored several books throughout his ministry. From 2006 until his death, Father Sassani was pastor of Our Lady Help of Christians and Sacred Heart Parish of Newton.

Father John is survived by his father Nicholas Sassani, his sister Martha A. Lausier, nephews Matthew S. Lausier and his wife Caitlin, Michael L. Lausier and his wife Janie, Mark N. Lausier, niece Megan E. Toborg, 3 grand nephews; Michael and Wesley Toborg and Matthew Lausier Jr., aunts C. Patricia Cashman, Mary M. Cullin, as well as many cousins. He was predeceased by uncles Dr. Edward L. Cashman Jr., Dr. John Sassani, Michael Sassani, aunts Anna Petrone, and Frances Sassani.

Father John will lie in repose in Our Lady Help of Christians Church 573 Washington St. Newton on Wednesday April 24, 2019 from 2-5pm, followed by a mass at 5pm. Visiting hours will be Thursday from 2-6pm at SOLIMINE FUNERAL HOME 67 Ocean St. (Rt1A). A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11AM on Friday April 26, 2019 at St. John the Evangelist Church Swampscott, followed by burial in Swampscott Cemetery. Relatives and friends at respectfully invited.
