Father John C. Tynan died on May 19, 2017 at Mission St. Teresa’s. He was 83 years old and a Maryknoll priest for 54 years.

John Clement Tynan was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on December 8, 1933, son of James and Mary Ellen Sullivan Tynan. He had two brothers, who are deceased, and one sister. Father Tynan graduated from St. Mary of the Assumption High School in 1952 and entered Maryknoll in June of that year. He obtained a BA degree in Philosophy while at Glen Ellyn (1957) and a STB (1961) and a MRE (1962) from the Maryknoll School of Theology.

Following ordination on June 9, 1962, Father Tynan was assigned to Korea. After language school, he began mission as a Curate in Tap Tong and To Hwa Dong and helped build a Student Center Library in Inchon. Father Tynan stayed in Korea until he was assigned to the United States in September 1968. After three years of parish work, Father Tynan was assigned back to Korea in February 1971. He worked with Father Al Fleming in Chang Ho Won. In May of 1976 Father Tynan was assigned to the Philippines Region. He worked there for over three years and then was assigned to the United States Region. In February 1981 Father Tynan was re-assigned to Korea. He missioned in that country for thirteen years and returned to the United States in April 1994 to work in the Development Department.

Father Tynan was assigned to the Hong Kong Region on June 1, 1997 to work in China. For five years he served as an English literature teacher in Inner Mongolia, China. In 2002 he began teaching in a small farming town in Yunnan Province in China, 30 miles from the Vietnam border.

Father Tynan returned to the United States in 2007 and was assigned to the Retirement Community in October 2008. He resided at Mission St. Teresa’s.

A Rosary and wake service was held at 4:00 p.m. on May 23, 2017 at Mission St. Teresa’s. The body was received at the Maryknoll Society Center at 9:30 a.m., May 24, 2017. The biography was read by Father Joseph R. Veneroso. Mass of Christian Burial was concelebrated in Queen of Apostles Chapel on May 24, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Father Michael A. Duggan was Principal Celebrant and Father William F. Mullan was homilist. Burial followed in Maryknoll Society Cemetery. — Maryknoll Biography
