Reverend Joseph P. Jaros, a Toledo Diocesean Priest since 1956, passed away on Saturday, August 1, 2015, at the Ursuline Center in Toledo, Ohio after serving the Toledo Catholic Diocese for 59 years.

He was born on September 29, 1930, in Toledo to Joseph G. and Anna (Martis) Jaros. He grew up in the Parish of Sts. Cyril and Methodius, Rossford and attended Good Shepherd Elementary School, Toledo. He entered Saint Meinrad Minor Seminary, Indiana at the age of 13 and continued his studies at Mount Saint Mary Seminary in Cincinnati where he completed his theological studies in 1956. He was ordained on May 26, 1956, at Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral, Toledo, Ohio by the Most Reverend George J. Rehring, DD.

In the early years of his ministry he served as Parochial Vicar at St. John the Baptist, Toledo (1956-1967), Immaculate Conception, Ottoville (1967-1968) and St. Charles Borromeo, Lima ((1968-1969). He served as Pastor at Immaculate Conception, Marysdale and St. Stephen, The Bend (1969-1971), St. Boniface, Oak Harbor (1971-1976), St. Vincent de Paul, Toledo (1976-1985), and St. Mary, Assumption (1985 – 1990). He was Parochial Administrator of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, Berkey (1988), Parochial Vicar of St. Charles Borromeo, Lima (1990-1991) and Pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus, Toledo (1991-1996). He also served as a Judge of the Court of Second Instance for the Diocese of Toledo Tribunal and Dean of the former Will-Ful-L Deanery, Appellate Judge, Toledo for the Diocese of Cleveland, Moderator for the Toledo Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (1971-1981) and Pro-synodal Examiner and Parish Priest Consultor, and served as a member of Diocesan Consultors for a 3 year term.

Fr. Joe entered senior status in 1996. In retirement he continued to serve the diocese as a mission homilist and provided Sacramental Ministry to Little Sisters of the Poor, Toledo Hospital, Mary Immaculate School, Lial School, and the Catholic War Vets. He would also accommodate his fellow priests in any capacity needed.

Fr. Joe was an avid fan of Notre Dame, Detroit Tigers and the Cleveland Browns. He enjoyed golfing with his fellow priests and most of all spending time with his family. Over the years he stayed in touch with the members of his eighth grade class and they recently had a reunion at the Ursuline Center with 15 of his classmates attending.

Left to cherish his memory is his brother, James (Shirley) Jaros of Brooklyn, MI; his sister, Joanne (Dennis) Siefke of Graytown, OH, and dear friend, Sister Ann McManus, OSU. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Family and friends may visit at All Saints Catholic Church, 628 Lime City Rd., Rossford, Ohio on Thursday, August 6, 2015, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. The Right of Reception of the Body will be at 2 p.m. and Vespers will be at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue on Friday, August 7, 2015, beginning at 9 a.m. in the church until 11 a.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. in the Church with Monsignor William J. Kubacki, Vicar General officiating. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Toledo. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the Ursuline Center and all of the Sisters for the special care given to our brother and uncle.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the Priest’s Retirement Fund of the Toledo Diocese or the Ursuline Center.
