Father Louis Fischer, 83, died on February 6, 2009, in San Diego. Father Lou was born on April 28, 1925, in St. Louis,MO.His father Louis Fischer Sr. was a baker and his mother Caroline worked with her husband in the family business. After completing his primary education in public schools, he attended Purdue University where he received a BS Degree in Chemical Engineering in 1944. During World War II, he served in the Army in both Europe and the South Pacific. After the War, he worked for the Campbell Soup Co. in quality control and development positions and later was the Vice President and General Manager of Redi-Foods headquartered in Salt Lake City, UT. He began studying for the Priesthood in 1957, which included a year of intense Latin at St. Mary’s College in Kentucky, and two years of philosophical studies at St. Thomas Seminary in Denver,CO, for which he received a BA Degree in Philosophy. He then spent four years at Gregorian University in Rome concentrating on theological studies for which he received STB and STL degrees. He was ordained as a Roman Catholic Priest on December 18, 1963, and was incardinated in the Diocese of Salt Lake City. During his ministry, he served as an Associate Pastor, Catholic High School Religious Studies teacher, and was the Director of Vocations for the Diocese. Father Lou was active in Ecumenical affairs, Priest’s Council, and also established the Lay Volunteer Program in the Diocese. He also served for seven years as the Pastor of Notre Dame Parish in Price, UT, before taking a sabbatical from 1979 – 1980, during which he studied, wrote, and traveled to Rome, Israel, South Africa, and India. Seeking to “semi-retire” he moved toSan Diegoin 1987. He served seven years as a Hospital Chaplain and worked fulltime as weekend supply at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and Our Mother of Confidence, both in San Diego. Father Lou also worked in Engaged Encounter, officiated at weddings and funerals, and ministered to anyone in need. He enjoyed swimming, golf, a good book, raising a dog and entertaining his close circle of friends. His greatest joy was being a Priest and sharing his experience of Jesus with other pilgrims on the journey. Father Lou is survived by a brother, Donald Fischer, of Colleyville, Texas, and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, February 12, 2009, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in San Diego. The Vigil for the Deceased will be celebrated at 6:30 p.m. at the Church. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, February 13, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal will be private and held at a later date.
