Father Casabón died Easter Sunday, April 20, at around 11:30 p.m., after suffering from “a lot of complications” related to old age, including liver and kidney failure and diabetes.

A viewing for Father Luis Casabón will be held Wednesday, April 23, from 7:30 to 10 p.m., at Prince of Peace Church, 12800 N.W. Sixth St., Miami. The prayer service will begin at 8 p.m.

Archbishop Thomas Wenski will preside at the funeral Mass Thursday, April 24, at 11 a.m. at St. Brendan Church, 8725 S.W. 32 St., Miami. The Mass will be preceded by another viewing, from 9 to 10:45 a.m., in St. Brendan. Burial will follow at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Cemetery in Doral.

He spent a year at the seminary of El Buen Pastor in Havana before being sent to the Gregorian University in Rome where he obtained a licentiate in sacred theology. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Havana on Dec. 23, 1961 in Rome.

“The last few years he was just home, but he always kept active, celebrating daily Mass, praying the Office, and receiving the many people who would come to see him seeking comfort,” said Father José Alfaro, administrator of Blessed Trinity Church in Miami Springs, who described himself as Father Casabón’s “spiritual son.”

While in Europe, he undertook additional summer studies in France until 1963, when he returned to Cuba. From 1963 to 1972, he served as pastor of four churches in the province of Havana: Santo Cristo del Buen Viaje in downtown Havana; San Julian in Güines; Nuestra Señora del Rosario and Santo Cura de Ars in Melena del Sur; and Santísima Trinidad in Guara.
