A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted for Fr. Martin “Marty” Cristopher Borcherding, 66, at 10 a.m. Monday, July 22, 2013, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Bishop Michael Jarrell will serve as the celebrant for the services. Interment will follow at Holy Family Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at Evangeline Funeral Home on Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. with a Rosary at 7 p.m. on both evenings. Visitation will resume at St. Peter’s Catholic Church on Monday morning at 9 a.m. until service time.A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., and resident of New Iberia, Fr. Marty passed away at 3:18 p.m. on Thursday, July 18, 2013, at Consolata Nursing Home. Fr. Marty attended Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans from 1969-1973; obtained his Master’s Degree in psychology and his bachelor’s degree in education from Loyola University and was ordained with a master’s degree in theology for the Diocese of Lafayette by Bishop Gerard Frey on May 19, 1973.
Fr. Marty served as Associate Pastor at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, New Iberia; Spiritual Director, St. Louis Catholic High School, Lake Charles; Pastor at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Loreauville; St. Therese Catholic Church, Abbeville; Holy Cross Catholic Church, Lafayette; St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, Lafayette; Administrator, Holy Cross, Lafayette. He also served on the Council of Priests, Clergy Personnel Advisory Board and the Bishop’s Development Council.
He is survived by his three sisters Barbara Jesset and husband, Thomas, and Christine Blome and husband, Lothar, all of Abbeville, and Therese O’Connor and husband, Christopher, of Whitestone, N.Y.; two brothers Stephen Borcherding and wife, Tracy, of Elmont, N.Y., and James Borcherding of New Iberia; nieces and nephews, Robert Jesset and wife, Jennifer, Jeffrey Borcherding and wife, Mary, Brian Blome, Brittany Aucoin and husband, Jared, Kaitlyn O’Connor and Kevin O’Connor; great-nieces and great-nephews Alissa Aucoin, Gavin Aucoin and Owen Jesset; and his devoted and loyal friend Mona Vizena of Lafayette. He was preceded in death by his parents, Christian Lawrence and Beverly Rita Drysdale Borcherding.
Pallbearers will be priests from the Diocese of Lafayette. Honorary pallbearers will be Stephen Borcherding, Thomas Jesset, Lothar Blome, Robert Jesset, Brian Blome, Jeffrey Borcherding, Christopher O’Connor, Kevin O’Connor and James Borcherding.
