Reverend Monsignor Anthony McDevitt, S. T. L., J. C. D. – born in Birmingham, Alabama on July 25, 1925; ordained a priest May 26, 1949 in Birmingham, Alabama; died peacefully at his family’s home in Daphne, Alabama on September 14, 2010. Monsignor McDevitt served in the Diocese of Mobile-Birmingham until the formation of t he Archdiocese of Mobile and served as a priest for over 61 years in many parishes including Christ the King, Daphne; St. Joan of Arc, Holy Family and Our Savior and for years at the Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. He also served as peritus at Vatican Council II and as Judicial Vicar of the Archdiocese of Mobile. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Margaret Tomerlin McDevitt; his sister Frances McDevitt Scalise; and his brothers Reverend Joseph P. McDevitt and James E. McDevitt. He is survived by his sisters Mary McDevitt Burnet of Rockville, Maryland and Margaret McDevitt Robinson of Sandy Springs, Georgia; many nieces, nephews and many devoted friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception on Friday, September 17, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. The family will receive friends at the Cathedral one hour prior to Mass. Interment will be at a private service in Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham. The family suggests donations be made in Memory of Monsignor McDevitt to Catholic Charities.
