Rev. Msgr. Anthony Muntone, Pastor Emeritus, Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Church, Whitehall, died on 30 May 2018, at Holy Family Villa for Priests, Bethlehem. He was 81.

Born in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania, Monsignor Muntone was the son of the late Anthony and Assunta (Bruno) Muntone. He is survived by a brother, John Muntone of Jersey City, New Jersey, along with nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and close friends. He was predeceased by his brothers James and Joseph.

Monsignor Muntone is a graduate of J.W. Cooper High School, Shenandoah. He then studied for the Priesthood at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary, Overbrook, and Pontifical North American College, Rome where he received a Licentiate in Sacred Theology.

He was ordained to the Priesthood on 12 July 1964 by The Most Reverend Filippo Pocci at the Church of the Twelve Apostles, Rome, Italy. Monsignor Muntone’s first Diocesan assignment was Parochial Vicar, Our Lady Help of Christians Church, Allentown, and Associate Professor, Allentown Central Catholic High School. He was then named Assistant Chancellor, with residence at Immaculate Conception Rectory, Allentown, and later, Diocesan Chancellor, and Pro-Synodal Judge, Diocesan Tribunal. Monsignor Muntone’s first Pastoral assignment was Pastor, Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Church, Whitehall. While serving as Pastor of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, he was also appointed Diocesan Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia from 1988 to 1998. Monsignor Muntone remained Pastor of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary until his retirement.

During the course of his Priestly Ministry, Monsignor Muntone served as Member, Diocesan Liturgical Commission; Secretary, Council of Priests; Chairman, Diocesan Liturgical Commission; Member, Council of Priests – Diocesan Consultors; Member, Committee for Priestly Formation; and Member, Priest Personnel Board. Monsignor Muntone retired on 12 June 2012 and was named Pastor Emeritus, Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Church, Whitehall. Monsignor Muntone was named Prelate of Honor to His Holiness by Pope Paul VI on 14 March 1977, and Prothonotary Apostolic by Pope John Paul II on 31 January 1992.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Monsignor Muntone will be celebrated at Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Church, 618 Fullerton Ave, Whitehall, PA 18052 on Monday, 4 June 2018, at 11:00 AM, by His Excellency, The Most Reverend Alfred A. Schlert, D.D., J.C.L., Bishop of Allentown. The Homilist will be Reverend Monsignor John P. Murphy, Pastor, Saint Thomas More Church, Allentown. Main Concelebrants will be Reverend Monsignor David L. James, Vicar General; Reverend Monsignor Gerald E. Gobitas, Secretary for Clergy, Diocesan Chancellor, and Rector, Holy Family Villa for Priests; Reverend Patrick H. Lamb, Pastor, Queenship of Mary Church, Northampton; Reverend Richard Clement, Pastor, Saint John Baptist de la Salle Church, Shillington, and Reverend Monsignor John P. Murphy. Calling Hours will be held in Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Church, Whitehall, on Monday, 4 June 2018, before Mass, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Interment will take place on his family plot in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights.
