Rev. Msgr. Austin P.-Bennett-Obituary

Austin P. Bennett JCD, PA, KCHS, passed away on January 31, 2017 at the age of 93. A native of Brooklyn, he was an alumnus of Our Lady of Angels School, Regis High School and the College of the Holy Cross. He was ordained a priest in the Brooklyn Diocese in 1949 and later received his Doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He served the Diocese of Brooklyn for over 65 years in various capacities including Vicar for Administration and most recently as a consultant to the Bishop. He was a member of many charitable boards including most recently Ozanam Hall and the Confraternity of the Precious Blood. He celebrated mass at St. Rita’s Church in Long Island City for over 40 years. Serving people was his greatest love and he was known to have time for anyone who sought his counsel.

He is survived by nephew James B. Hamerschlag, James’ wife Elizabeth, great-niece Grace and longtime friends Sr. Joan Deering, Sr. Marianne Lopiccolo and Rev. Thomas Doyle. A wake will be held on Thursday, February 2nd between 2pm and 7pm at the Diocese of Brooklyn located at 310 Prospect Park West, Brooklyn. There will be a Vigil Mass in the Diocese Chapel at 7:30pm on Thursday night. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, February 3rd at 10:30 am at the Cathedral Basilica of St. James, located at 250 Cathedral Place, Brooklyn. Visitors may call at the Cathedral between the hours of 9am and 10am prior to Mass. Burial will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, Brooklyn. Knights and Ladies of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem are invited to process in Church Capes of the Order. Clavin Funeral Home (718) 745-1445.
