For 44 years, Msgr. Charles J. Giglio was an influential figure in the Diocese of Camden, as an administrator, educator, editor and parish priest, known for his exacting standards and loyalty to the church.

Msgr. Giglio was born in New Brunswick, N.J., and was ordained a priest of the Camden Diocese on May 31, 1958. He taught at Holy Spirit High School, Atlantic City, and Gloucester Catholic High School, and in 1965, at the age of 32, was named principal of St. James High School, Penns Grove. The following year he was named principal of Camden Catholic High School, Cherry Hill.

He held numerous administrative positions in the diocese, including vicar for communications and community relations, episcopal vicar for pastoral planning and budgeting, and diocesan historian and archivist. He was editor of the book “Building God’s Kingdom: A History of the Diocese of Camden” that was published to coincide with the diocese’s 50th anniversary.

He also helped coordinate the Camden Diocese’s celebration of church’s Great Jubilee of the Year 2000.

Msgr. Giglio held a doctorate in philosophy from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. A self-described perfectionist, he was devoted to the bishops he served and widely respected for his intelligence.

He served as executive editor of the Catholic Star Herald for 15 years, and as rector of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Camden, from 1992 until his death in 2002.

On Augst 23, 2002 he died, at the age of 69, from complications following a kidney transplant.
