Monsignor Rev. David S. Slubecky, 71, of Depew, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2019.

A native of Batavia, New York, Slubecky earned his bachelor’s degree in philosophy at St. John Vianney Seminary, his bachelor’s in sacred theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Italy, his licentiate in sacred theology at Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome and his licentiate in canon law from pontifical Gregorian University.

He was ordained at St. John the Baptist in Alden in 1973. He started as an assistant at St. Mary’s in Batavia. He went on to work at St. Ignatius Renewal Center in Clarence. He served as: Assistant Director, Permanent Diaconate Program; Director, Permanent Diaconate Formation Program; Administrator, Diocesan Renewal Center; Vice Judicial Vicar, Marriage Tribunal; Weekend Assistant with residency, St. Lawrence, Buffalo; and Judicial Vicar, Tribunal with residency at Sisters of Mercy Convent, Buffalo, before being appointed Chaplain to His Holiness.

In 1994, he became the Pastor at Fourteen Holy Helpers in West Seneca, where he served until 2005.

Additional roles he served included: Episcopal Vicar, Eastern Erie Vicariate; Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia with residence at St. Joseph Cathedral, Buffalo; Appointed Prelate of Honor to His Holiness; Temporary Administrator, St. Joseph Cathedral, Buffalo; and Defender of the Bond for the Court of First Instance, Tribunal.

He retired in June of 2018.

The honors he received in his career included Chaplain to His Holiness, Pope John Paul II in 1988 and Prelate of Honor to His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, St. Thomas More Award in 2018.

Slubecky is survived by his siblings, Elaine, Rita, Daniel and Donald.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Joseph’s Cathedral Monday, presided over by Bishop Richard Malone.
