GILBERTVILLE – Funeral services for Monsignor Edward C. Petty, 60, pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish in Gilbertville and St. Joseph Parish in Raymond, will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville, with Archbishop Jerome Hanus, OSB, presiding. He died on October 16, 2007.
There will be a visitation from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Gilbertville, with a 7 p.m. rosary. There will be a visitation from 3 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21, at the Basilica of St. Francis Xavier in Dyersville, with a 7 p.m. rosary. There will also be a public viewing two hours before services on Monday, Oct. 22.
He died on Tuesday (Oct. 16, 2007) at Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque. Burial will be in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Dyersville.
Monsignor Petty was born Oct. 8, 1947, to Edward and Lillian (Bosley) Petty in Des Moines. He graduated from Loras College in Dubuque; taught at Wahlert High School in Dubuque, 1969-73; and completed his theological studies at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 19, 1977, by His Eminence Sergio Cardinal Pignedoli at the North American College Chapel in Rome. He served as assistant papal master of ceremonies for the Vatican, 1975-77.
He was associate pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish in Gilbertville, while serving on the faculty of Don Bosco High School, 1977-79.
He completed advanced studies at the National Catholic School of Social Services, Catholic University, Washington, D.C., 1979-81, and earned a master’s degree in social work.
He served as associate/acting director of Dubuque Archdiocesan Catholic Charities, 1981-82, and director of Catholic Charities, 1982-87. He was pastor of St. Donatus Parish in St. Donatus, 1985-87, and Immaculate Conception Parish in Charles City and St. Mary Parish in Roseville, 1987-92. He served as pastor of St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville, 1992-2004; and St. Paul Parish in Worthington, 2002-2004.
He was executive coordinator of the Beckman School System, Dyersville, 1994-2004.
He had been pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish in Gilbertville and St. Joseph Parish in Raymond and spiritual director of Don Bosco High School in Gilbertville since 2004.
He was named a prelate of honor (monsignor) on April 26, 2003.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving is a brother, William, of Des Moines.
