Msgr. John W. Lolio, Pastor of Our Lady of Mercy and Dean of Deanery IX unexpectedly passed away last night.

The Solemn Transferal of his body will be celebrated on Thursday, May 10 at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 65 Third Street, East Greenwich at 4:00 p.m., followed by calling hours until 8:00 p.m.

A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be offered for the repose of his soul at Our Lady of Mercy Church, East Greenwich at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 11, 2012.

Monsignor Lolio was born in Providence and educated there in public schools. He attended Our Lady of Providence Seminary before completing his studies at St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore, Maryland. He was ordained on May 23, 1970 by Bishop Kelly in St. Augustine Church, Providence.

Upon ordination to the priesthood, Monsignor was assigned as assistant pastor of St. Sebastian Parish, Providence and the faculty of Our Lady of Providence Preparatory Seminary where he served as chairman of the English department and taught a variety of courses including classical literature and Latin. He also served as assistant pastor of St. Anthony Parish in North Providence before being appointed chaplain at Bryant College in Smithfield, R.I in 1977. While at the college he attended to the pastoral and sacramental needs of the students and faculty while also serving as a member of the college counseling center staff.

In 1980 Msgr. Lolio was appointed pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, an Italian national parish in Bristol, while there he served as Vicar Forane for the East Bay deanery. In 1992 Father Lolio was appointed pastor of Our Lady of Mercy Parish in East Greenwich. Among his notable accomplishments as pastor, he expanded the program of the parish elementary school. Since 1995, Father has served as Vicar Forane for the West Bay Deanery

In January, 2009, he was honored by Pope Benedict XVI, to be named as one of ten priests in the diocese as ‘Chaplains to His Holiness’ with the title ‘Reverend Monsignor’. ‘Chaplains to His Holiness’ are a Pontifical honor in recognition of the recipient’s service and commitment to the Church.
