GOODWINE, REV. MSGR. JOSEPH GERARD – Joseph Gerard Goodwine was born January 4, 1916 in Manhattan to Jacob Goodwine and Ellen Dunn. He received his A.B. degree from St. Joseph’s Seminary in 1937. He studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome from 1937 – 1939 from which he received an S.T.B. degree. On June 8, 1941, he was ordained at St. Patrick’s Cathedral a priest of the Archdiocese of New York. In 1942, he began his studies at the Catholic University of America in Washington from which he received a J.C.D. degree in Canon Law. After three years as assistant pastor at St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral, he was appointed assistant chancellor, and in 1950 administrator of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Sleepy Hollow. In 1953, Msgr. Goodwine was appointed to the staff of the Metropolitan Tribunal with residence in Our Lady of Refuge Parish in the Bronx. In 1956, he was named Defender of the Bond and then in 1960 Vice Officialis of the tribunal. During that same year, the Holy Father gave him the title of Papal Chamberlain and in 1966 that of Domestic Prelate. In 1968, Msgr. Goodwine was named Officialis of the tribunal by the late Terence Cardinal Cooke. In 1972, he was appointed pastor of Our Lady of Fatima parish in Scarsdale where he remained until 1976 when he returned to the tribunal and founded the Westchester office in Mt. Kisco. From 1976 until his retirement to Florida in 1995, he resided at St. Francis of Assisi parish in Mt. Kisco. Msgr. Goodwine is survived by his beloved adopted family of Frank and Bernadette Walsh and their children. Also survived by his sister-in-law Margaret Goodwine, of Mahwah, NJ., 6 nephews and a niece. He was predeceased by his brothers, Rev. Msgr. John A. Goodwine and William Goodwine, both in 1997. Viewing will be on December 10 at the Church of St. Francis of Assisi in Mt. Kisco from 4-7pm. The Mass of the Eucharist will be concelebrated by Bishop Robert Brucato, Vicar General, at 7:30pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated by Bishop William McCormack on December 11 at 11am. Interment will be in Florida.
