Msgr. Leo Feeney, pastor of Our Lady of the River Parish in LeClaire, died Oct. 6 in LeClaire after a lengthy illness. He was 67.

Born in Davenport, he graduated from Sacred Heart School and St.Ambrose Academy/Assumption High School, then St.Ambrose College in Davenport. He completed his theology studies at the North American College Gregorian University in Rome.

On Dec. 17, 1966, he was ordained by Bishop Francis Reh at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

Then-Father Feeney served as an assistant at St. Peter in Keokuk from 1967-70 and Holy Family in Davenport from 1970-71. He then taught at Assumption High School from 1971-74. Fr. Feeney served as the Diocese of Davenport’s vice chancellor from 1974-81 and chancellor from 1981-2000. In 1987 he was named a monsignor.

He also was administrator of St. Josephin Davenport and St. Mary in Davenport for a month in 1987 while serving as chancellor.

He returned to parish ministry in 2000 serving as a parochial vicar at Holy Family for a year before being appointed pastor of Our Lady of the River in 2001.

Msgr. Feeney was a consultor for the diocese, defender of the bond for the marriage tribunal and director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

Msgr. Feeney served as state chaplain for the Knights of Columbus and state faithful friar for the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus.

Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Oct. 9 at Our Lady of the River Catholic Church in LeClaire, with the Vigil Service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct.10, at Our Lady of the River, with Bishop Martin Amos presiding. Burial will be in the Priest’s Circle at Mt.Calvary Cemetery in Davenport.
