Monsignor Paul Willis Sheridan, 82, of Alton, IL formerly of Granite City passed away on Sunday, January 12, 2014 at St. Clair Villa in Alton. Paul was born on November 26, 1931 in Granite City, the son of the late Phillip Henry and Edna Marie (Willis) Sheridan. The Rt. Rev. Msgr.Sheridan attended Elementary and High School in Granite City. In 1953, Msgr. Sheridan graduated from St. Ambrose College in Davenport, IA and then attended Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome where he attained a degree in Theology. He was ordained at North American College in Rome on December 16, 1956 by the Most Rev. Martin J. O’Conner, Rector of the North American College and the ordaining Bishop. In 1964 he completed his graduate studies at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome where he attained a degree in Canon Law. He was given the Prelate of Honor as Monsignor by Pope Paul VI on April 26, 1974. His assignments included; Parochial Vicar at St. Matthew Church in Alton (1957-1960); Vice Chancellor in Springfield (1960-1961) Vice Chancellor (1964-1974); Chaplain at St. Joseph Home for the Aged in Springfield (1964-1989); Chancellor (1974-1984); Vicar General/Moderator of the Curia (1984-1989); Moderator for the Alton Deanery Council of Catholic Women (1989-2004); Administrator of Diocese (1983-1984); and Pastor at Immaculate Conception Church in Pierron, IL, and St. Nicholas Parish, Pocahontas, IL (1989-2005). He is survived by and will be missed by his sister; Mary Ellen Becherer of Granite City; numerous nieces and nephews. Monsignor Paul will be remembered for his love of Christ and the Catholic Church and the many lives he has touched through the many years of service to people. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters; Dolores M. Sheridan, Margaret M. Rehagen; and his brother, Phillip H.Sheridan. Friends may call on Friday, January 17, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 5:00 p.m. and a Chalice service at 7:00 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic church, 2606 Washington Ave. in Granite City. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the church with Msgr. Virgil Mank as celebrant and the Most Rev. Thomas John Paprocki and Fr. Jeff Holtman co-celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville, IL. Memorials are suggested to Masses or Joseph Home of the Aged in Springfield, IL. Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City is serving the family.
