Msgr. Raymond Hain, a retired priest of the Diocese of Lincoln, died Aug. 2, 2015. He was 91.

Msgr. Raymond Hain grew up in rural Butler County and attended Assumption High School in Dwight.

He was ordained in 1948 and served parishes in Elmwood, Hastings (St. Cecilia), Lincoln (Sacred Heart and St. Thomas Aquinas Newman Center), Manley, McCook (St. Patrick, St. Ann and Sacred Heart), Tecumseh, Plattsmouth and St. Mary.

In an interview with the Register in 2008, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of his ordination, Msgr. Hain said one of his most memorable assignments as a priest was ministering to children who were suffering from polio.

“One of the happiest days of my life was when we got the Salk vaccine for polio, because I had been around those kids so much,” he said.

In the 1950s, Msgr. Hain was vice rector for student personnel at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He was recalled to Lincoln in 1959 to organize the new Aquinas High School, in David City.

During Vatican II, Msgr. Hain was invited to attend the fourth session as an observer, something he called “just a great experience.”

He was also a chaplain (reservist) with the U.S. Navy, served the diocese as assistant chancellor, was assistant chaplain at St. Elizabeth Hospital, and was a spiritual director at St. Gregory the Great Seminary in Seward.

A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 7 in the Cathedral of the Risen Christ, Lincoln. Bishop James Conley will celebrate a funeral Mass Aug. 8 at 10:30 a.m. in the Cathedral. Msgr. Robert Roh and priests of the diocese will concelebrate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Msgr. Hain is survived by one sister and one brother; nieces and nephews.
