Rev. Monsignor Richard A. Maufort, 78, long time resident of Green Bay, entered eternal life, Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at a local hospital.

He was born October 19, 1929 inGreen Bayto Elmer and Zita (Dietzler) Maufort. After graduating from Central Catholic High School, he attended St. Paul Seminary inSt. Paul, Minnesota and North American College, Gregorian University in Rome. He was ordained at the North American College Chapel in Rome on Dec. 8, 1954.

Father Maufort’s first appointment was Assistant at St. Philip the Apostle Parish, Green Bayin 1955. In 1957, he was appointed to serve on the faculty of Sacred Heart Seminary in Green Bay. He graduated in 1963 with a master’s degree in Latin from Marquette University, Milwaukee. Father Maufort was appointed Pastor of St. Agnes Parish inGreen Bayin 1970. While at St. Agnes, he was responsible for building the current church in 1973. In 1975, he was raised to the dignity of Honorary Prelate. Monsignor Maufort was appointed Rector/Pastor of St. Francis Xavier Cathedral inGreen Bayin 1990. In 1992, he became Theological Advisor to the Bishop and Rector Emeritus of St. Francis Xavier Cathedral. Monsignor also served as a Prosynodal Judge for the Diocesan Tribunal, as a member of the Ecumenical Commission, on the board of the Permanent Deaconate, as a Regional Vicar for Vicariate VI, and on the board of Conciliation and Arbitration for the Diocese. In 1994, Monsignor was released from all pastoral assignments due to health reasons. He was granted Senior Priest Status on January 31, 2007.

While atSt.NorbertCollege, he established a track record that has never been broken. He later coached track at Sacred Heart Seminary. Monsignor Maufort loved hunting and his dogs. He loved to entertain by playing the harmonica.

Survivors include his sister, Marleen Lorberblatt, Green Bay; one brother and sister-in-law, Stephen and Mary Maufort, Green Bay; one sister-in-law, Patricia Maufort, Green Bay; his longtime caregiver and friend, Ray Charlier; many nieces and nephews, Mina (John) Teske, Clare Zipperer, Trudy Lorberblatt, Stephanie Maufort, Maureen and Robb Mommaerts, Jim Maufort, Phil Maufort, Ann Ryan, Barbara Maufort, great-nieces and great-nephews, Marti Teske, Mackenzie Teske, John Paul Maufort, Andrew Maufort, Klayton Zipperer, Kyra Zipperer, Allison Mommaerts; a great-great nephew, Aiden.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, John Maufort, two nephews, Tom Maufort, Marty Lorberblatt.

Reception of the body by Rev. Richard Getchel, Pastor of St. Agnes, will take place at 4 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2008, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1484 Ninth St. Visitation will follow from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday with a Parish Prayer Service at 6 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 26, 2008. The Funeral Liturgy, expressing our faith and our hope in the promised glory of the Lord’s Resurrection, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church with Bishop Robert F. Morneau as presider and homilist and Bishop Robert J. Banks concelebrating. Burial will be at Allouez Catholic Cemetery.

Monsignor Maufort’s family expresses their sincere gratitude to Monsignor’s longtime caregiver and friend, Ray Charlier. They also express their gratitude to the family of Daniel Felchlin. In 1993, Monsignor Maufort was the recipient of Daniel’ss donated heart.

A memorial fund has been established in his name to benefit St. Agnes Parish and Holy Family School.
