Rev. Msgr. Roy J. Rihn, age 97, passed away on Monday, August 29, 2016. Born in Castroville, TX to Robert and Marie Rihn, Msgr. Rihn was a direct descendent of Laurent Rihn, ONC of the original settlers of Castroville. He attended St. Louis School in Castroville, St. John Seminary in San Antonio, the Gregorian University in Rome, Italy and the Catholic University in Washington D.C.. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 4, 1942.

Msgr. Rihn was the founding Pastor of St. Pius X Parish in 1957, the Rector of Assumption Seminary, Pastor of St. Mary’s Parish in Victoria for 11 years, Priest in Residence of St. Paul’s Parish in San Antonio, and Vicar for Priests of the Archdiocese of San Antonio. After serving for 74 years Msgr. Rihn retired on July 1, 1995. He was the oldest priest in the San Antonio Archdiocese at the time of his death.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Mrs. Doris Biediger and brother Lloyd Rihn. He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Tessie Keller along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces, nephews and cousins. “Uncle Roy” presided over many of his family’s weddings, baptisms and funerals, and was the pillar of our family for his entire life.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 2nd from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 8500 Cross Mountain Trail, A Vigil Service will begin at 7:00 PM at the Church.

The Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Saturday, September 3rd at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of the Lake Sacred Heart Chapel, 515 SW 24th St. in San Antonio with interment to follow in Our Lady of the Lake Cemetery. Valet parking accommodations will be available for those who wish to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions are requested to be made to Our Lady of the Lake University, Casa de Padres or Padua Place.
