Msgr. Walter L. Schroeder, pastor emeritus of St. Patrick’s parish in Armonk, died June 21 in Sorrento, Italy, where he was visiting with a priest friend who serves there. He was 89.

He was pastor of St. Patrick’s from 1982 to 1994, when he retired. He previously was pastor of St. Joseph’s in Middletown, 1970-1982.

From 1943 to 1952, Msgr. Schroeder was assigned to the Holy Name Mission on the Bowery, where he ministered to the homeless men there.

Auxiliary Bishop Dominick Lagonegro, co-vicar of Orange County and pastor of Sacred Heart, Newburgh, offered the Funeral Mass on July 6 at St. Joseph’s Church.

The homilist was Father John Knapp, pastor of Our Lady of Solace parish in the Bronx, where Msgr. Schroeder had been assisting on Sundays. He also assisted at St. Dominic’s, a neighboring parish in the Bronx, Father Knapp said.

Born in Manhattan, Msgr. Schroeder attended Cathedral College and St. Joseph’s Seminary, Dunwoodie, before his ordination in 1941. He later earned a master’s degree at Fordham University.urial was in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Middletown.
