Rev. Msgr. William V. Sullivan Jr., 65, Rector of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart and Judicial Vicar of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond, passed away Monday, January 1, 2007 after a short illness. Msgr. Sullivan was ordained a priest in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome on December 17, 1966 and was named a Prelate of Honor by Pope John Paul II in December of 1996. He attended St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore, Md., and both the Pontifical North American College and the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Msgr. Sullivan received degrees in Canon Law from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He had previously served as Pastor of St. Peter’s Church and St. Bridget’s Church in Richmond, St. Ann’s Church in Ashland, and Star of the Sea Church in Virginia Beach. Preceded in death by his father, William V. Sullivan Sr., he is survived by his mother, Alice Rooney Sullivan of Richmond; two sisters, Peggy S. Carr and her husband, Joseph of Norfolk, and Betty S. Vickhouse and her husband, Stan of Richmond; three nieces, Angela E. Stinnett of Richmond, Karen C. Frank and her husband, Anthony of New Bern, N.C., and Amy S. Hardy and her husband, Andrew of Richmond; one nephew, Kevin P. Carr of Norfolk; two great-nieces and a great-nephew. The family will receive friends Thursday at St. Joseph’s Home for the Aged – Little Sisters of the Poor from 2 to 4 p.m. with the Rosary to be prayed at 3:30 p.m. A Christian Vigil Service will be held Thursday evening at 7 p.m. in the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart with the family receiving friends one hour prior to the service. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday in the Cathedral with burial following in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
