Roman, Rev. Paul A. ALBANY , 73, of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany, passed away on Monday, March 22, 2010 at St. Peter’sNursing & RehabilitationCenterafter a long illness. Father Roman was a diocesan priest for 38 years. Paul Anthony Roman was born January 15, 1937 to Alexander and Frances (Kolakowska) Roman. He was the fourth child in a family of 11 children. Rev. Roman attended the parochial schools of St. Casimir and St. Joseph’s Academy, and Philip Livingston and Albany High School. For three years, he served as a sergeant in the National Guard, receiving his honorable discharge on July 11, 1956. Father worked for the court of claims and the New York State Office of Audit and Control before entering Mater Christi Seminary in 1962. He studied atSt. Joseph’s Seminary, Dunwoodie, Yonkers and was ordained in 1971. His first assignment was at St. James Church, Albany. He then became district director of religious education, first in Warren County and then in Fulton County. He thereafter ministered at St. PaultheApostleChurchinSchenectadyand taught at Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons High School there. Father Roman had served as pastor at All Saints, Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St. Mary’s Churches in Granville, and in 1989, was appointed to St. Mary’s in Oneonta. He also served as dean to the priests of Otsego County while at St. Mary’s. Father retired in 2003 after a brief illness. Father Roman was predeceased by his parents as well as his brother, Anthony (Eddie) Roman. He is survived by his brothers, John (Joyce) Roman of Watervliet, Frank Roman of Seminole, Fla., George Roman of Hollywood, Fla. and Charles (Marilyn) Roman of Altamont; as well as his sisters, Mary Zwink of Colonie, Sister Barbara Roman, RSM of Slingerlands, Irene Roman of Delmar, Frances (Richard) Egan of Albany and Paulette Roman of Albany. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, great-grandnieces and a great-grandnephew. The Roman family wishes to thank the staff of St. Peter’sNursing & Rehabilitation Center, as well as Community Hospice, for their compassionate and loving care of Father Paul during his illness. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Thursday atSt. ThomastheApostleChurch,35 Adams Place, Delmar. A reception of the body will take place at 4:00 p.m., with calling hours from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Bishop Howard J. Hubbard on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Church. Burial will follow in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Colonie.
