Father Richard Lutgen, 73, a priest of the Diocese of Salina for 48 years, died early Sunday morning, December 6, 2009 in Wichita. His funeral Mass was celebrated Wednesday, December 9 at St. John the Baptist Church in Beloit. Father Lutgen retired in 2002. He had several medical issues related to his heart transplant in 1988.
His first assignment in 1962 was assistant pastor at St. Mary, Queen of the Universe Parish in Salina. He then became pastor at St. Paul’s Parish in Delphos and St. Mary’s in Glasco in 1966. After several other pastoral assignments through the years, he retired 2002. However during retirement, he was chaplain at Mount St. Joseph Senior Village in Concordia till his death.
