Rev. Robert Brown

 Rev. Robert Patrick Brown, 79, of Sioux City, formerly of Emmetsburg, passed away Monday, January 1, 2018 at Holy Spirit Nursing Home in Sioux City.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg, with the Rev. Clem Currans officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Ayrshire, Iowa. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time Monday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg.

Robert Patrick Brown, the son of Matthew and Mabel (Iverson) Brown, was born on March 17, 1938. He began his education in Ayrshire and then attended Saint Mary’s Academy in Emmetsburg, which later became Emmetsburg Catholic School. While in high school, Bob played guard for the boys basketball team that won the state championship in 1956. Following high school, Bob attended Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minn. He then continued his education at the North American College Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Rev. Robert Patrick Brown was ordained on Dec. 18, 1963 at the Church of Christo Rey in Rome. He celebrated his first mass in Assumption Catholic Church in Emmetsburg on July 12, 1964.

Rev. Bob served in the Sioux City Diocese as a pastor, teacher and administrator. His assignments were as follows: Kuemper High School in Carroll, Iowa, as faculty from 1964-1969; Assistant Pastor at Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Fonda from1969-1970; Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Fonda as Faculty from 1969-1970; St. Thomas Parish in Mason, Iowa, as administrator from 1970-1971; St. Edmond High School in Fort Dodge, Iowa, as faculty from 1970-1971; Bishop Heelan High School in Sioux City as Faculty from 1971-1982; Immaculate Conception Parish in Sioux City as sacramental minister from 1971-1982; Sacred Heart Parish in Sioux City as pastor from 1982-1991; Vicar Forane/Dean from 1989-1991; Defender of the Bond as Tribunal with the Diocese of Sioux City in 1983; St. Joseph Parish in Wall Lake, Iowa, as pastor from 1991-1993; St. Mary High School in Storm Lake, Iowa, as faculty in 1993; Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Mt. Carmel, Iowa, (attending Maple River) from 1993-2004; St. Bernard Parish in Breda, Iowa, as administrator in 2004; and St. Louis Parish in Royal, Iowa in 2004 (Retired).

He is survived by two sisters-in-law, Helen Brown of Emmetsburg, and Mary Brown of Gilbert, Ariz.; several nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Joe as a toddler, Dan Brown, John “Jay” Brown and Don Brown; and sisters, Mary Ann Linhart and Madeline Goodmanson.
