Reverend Robert George Sampon died on December 9, 2006 at the age of 78.
Father Sampon was born on August 22, 1928, at Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He began his studies at Saint Francis Minor Seminary and completed his priesthood formation at the Pontifical North American College in Rome (1948-1953). He was ordained to the priesthood on July 19, 1953 at Rome’s church of San Marcello by the Most Reverend Ettore Cunial.
Father’s priestly ministry began on August 10, 1954 as an assistant at St. Joseph Parish, Racine. On June 1, 1955, he was appointed secretary in the Chancery Office and Notary in Curia. Father left Milwaukee for graduate studies in Canon Law at Catholic University in Washington, DC on September 20, 1956. Upon completion of his studies and return to Milwaukee in June of 1959, he was appointed assistant chancellor; on October 11, 1969, Father was appointed the chancellor for the archdiocese. He was appointed to his first pastorate on January 12, 1982, serving St. Margaret Mary Parish, Milwaukee. Father was appointed administrator at Holy Trinity Parish in Newburg on June 21, 1994, serving there until his retirement from active ministry on June 30, 2002. In addition to his assistant chancellor, chancellor and pastor positions, Father also served as Defender of the Bond (October 13, 1959) and Promoter of Justice (April 10, 1967) for the Metropolitan Tribunal, and chaplain to St. Anne’ss Home for the Elderly, Milwaukee (December 4, 1967). He was appointed to the archdiocese’s Liturgical Commission on August 10, 1964, and served as secretary until October of 1969.
His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00pm on Friday, December 15, 2006 at St. Margaret Mary Parish, 3930 North 92nd Street, Milwaukee. Priest classmates and friends are invited to concelebrate; please bring an alb and white stole. Visitation will take place Thursday, December 14, 4:00-7:00pm, at St. Anne’s Home for the Elderly,3800 North 92nd Street, Milwaukee, and again Friday afternoon at St. Margaret Mary from noon until time for the two o’clock funeral liturgy.
Members of the Purgatorial Society will please offer the prescribed Mass for the repose of his soul and include Father Sampon’s intention in the General Intercessions at the parish. May he rest in peace.
