The Rev. Robert W. Shine, 84, a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Saginaw, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014 in Bad Axe, Mich. Father Shine was born on Sept. 15, 1929 in Bad Axe, the son of the late John and Theresa (Bubar) Shine. He received his elementary education at Port Crescent School and his secondary education in Kinde and Bad Axe public schools.

Father Shine attended college at Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit and continued his priestly formation at St. John’s Provincial Seminary in Plymouth, Mich. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 4, 1955 by the Most Rev. Stephen S. Woznicki, the second Bishop of Saginaw.

During his priesthood, Father Shine served as an assistant pastor at St. James, Whittemore; Our Lady of the Visitation, Bay City; and St. Andrew, Saginaw. He was an associate pastor at St. Christopher, Bridgeport and St. Stephen in Saginaw. He was pastor of St. Philip Neri, Coleman; St. Joseph, West Branch; St. Vincent de Paul, Shepherd; St. Patrick, Croswell; St. John the Evangelist, Peck; St. Michael, Port Austin; and St. Mary, Albee.

Throughout the years of his ministry, Father Shine also served as a teacher at Mercy College in Detroit and was chaplain at St. Joseph Hospital in Mount Clemens. He was granted senior priest status in 2004.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews, Marilyn and Ron Lamke of Bad Axe, Dan and Vanda Yaroch of Midland, Cindy and John Champagne of Bad Axe, Rick and Sharon Yaroch of Sanford, Shelly and Steve Lipford of Waterford, Susie and Mike Majznerski of Essexville, Sherry and Bob Thompson of Port Huron, Tim and Patty Shine of St. Clair, Gerry and Kelly Cristick of Royal Palm Beach, FL, Sue and Jim Westrick of Wellington, FL, Patty Harrison of Marysville, Kathy Weingartz of Marysville; and 24 great nieces and nephews

He was preceded in death by his brothers James Shine and John Shine; two sisters, Kathleen Yaroch and Marilyn Shine; one sister in law, Marilyn Shine; one brother in law, Anthony Yaroch, and his great nephew, Tyler Yaroch.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael Church, 8661 Independence St., Port Austin, Mich. at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 10. The Rev. William Rutkowski, Vicar General, will preside.

Visitation will be Thursday, Jan. 9, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at St. Michael Church, where Father Shine will lie in state, and well as Friday, January 10, 2014 from 10:00 am until the time of Mass. A Vigil for the deceased will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, the Rev. Ronald Wagner will preside. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Bad Axe, Michigan
