Rev. Timothy J. Soucy, 65, died Saturday, March 14, 2009, at St. Peter’s Rectory in Lowville, N.Y.A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Peter’s Church in Lowville Wednesday, March 18, at 11 a.m. Most Rev. Robert J. Cunningham, Bishop of the Diocese of Ogdensburg, presided at the funeral liturgy with the priests of the diocese concelebrating. Rev. J. Michael Gaffney, pastor of St. Mary’s and St. Joseph’s Church in Massena, was the homilist. The body was received at St. Peter’s Church Tuesday, March 17, at 11 a.m. with calling hours following until 9 p.m. Vespers service was at 7 p.m. Burial will be in the spring at St. Mary’s Cathedral cemetery in Ogdensburg, N.Y.

Father Soucy was born Jan. 17, 1944, in Ogdensburg, the son of the late Mr. James T. and Dorothy (Gardner) Soucy. He graduated from Lisbon Central School in 1961 and in 1965 from LeMoyne College with a bachelor of arts in political science. He taught for two years at Immaculate Heart Central in Watertown before entering the seminary.

Father Soucy studied at Wadhams Hall Seminary College in Ogdensburg, St. John Vianney Seminary in East Aurora and completed his bachelor of arts in theology at St. Bernard’s Seminary in Rochester. He was ordained to the priesthood May 5, 1973, at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Ogdensburg, by Most Rev. Stanislaus J. Brzana, Bishop of the Diocese of Ogdensburg.

Father Soucy’s first assignment was as an assistant pastor at St. Joseph’s Parish, Massena, with the additional assignment as a faculty member at Holy Family High School, Massena. In 1974, he was assigned as assistant pastor at St. Augustine’s Parish in Peru, N.Y., and one year later as assistant at St. Patrick’s Parish in Watertown, with the additional assignment of faculty member at Immaculate Heart Central High School in Watertown.

Father Soucy continued to serve on the faculty at IHC, while also being assigned as assistant pastor, first at Immaculate Conception Brownville and later at St. Patrick’s in Watertown. In 1984, he was named pastor in Indian Lake and in 1986, pastor of St. Mary’s in Champlain, N.Y. In 1995, he was appointed pastor of St Bernard’s in Saranac Lake, N.Y., and as Dean of the Adirondack deanery. In 1997, he was given additional parishes of St. John in the Wilderness, Lake Clear and Church of the Angel Gabriel, Paul Smiths. Father Soucy served as pastor of St. Peter’s in Lowville, St. Hedwig’s, Houseville, St. Mary’s, Glenfield and St. Thomas, Grieg, since 2002. He was also Dean of Lewis Deanery.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, BPOE 1605, Lowville Lodge, Turin Highlands Golf Club and the Hibernia’s. In 2008, he was inducted into the Lisbon Central School Sports Hall of Fame.He enjoyed golfing, cooking, gardening and traveling. He was an avid Notre Dame football fan and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
