The Rev. Monsignor Walter E. Mehm, 79, retired vicar general of the Diocese of      Lansing, Mich., died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, at Villa Crest Nursing Home in Manchester, N.H. Born April 19, 1920, in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late William and Elizabeth (Walter) Mehm. He attended St. Nicholas Grammar School in Wilkes-Barre. He studied for the priesthood at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio, and was ordained March 10, 1946. He received his doctorate in Canon law at the Gregorian University in Rome, Italy. Upon his return to the Diocese of Lansing, he served as secretary to the bishop, chancellor and vicar general. He also served as pastor at St. Peter’s Church in Eaton Rapids, Mich., Immaculate Heart of Mary in Lansing, St. John Vianney in Flint, Mich., and St. Agnes in Fowlerville, Mich. Upon his retirement, he served as a sacramental minister at St. Luke Parish in Flint. For the past year, he resided at Villa Crest Nursing Home, where he continued his ministry to the sick.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph, Carl and George. Surviving are his brothers, William, Albuquerque, N.M.; and Francis, Honesdale; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be Monday at St. John Vianney Church. Interment will be in Old Calvary Cemetery in Flint.
